The Edmonton Oilers risk potentially losing two players, Philip Broberg & Dylan Holloway, to offer sheets put forward from the St. Louis Blues. New reporting reveals the team has been pushing for the duo long before the offer sheet, and could have had a deal done before the Blues forced Edmonton’s end.
The Blues recently tendered offer sheets to Broberg and Holloway this past Tuesday, giving the Oilers seven days to match the deals, or recieve draft pick compensation from St. Louis as a return.
According to Sportsnet Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman, St. Louis has been targeting both Holloway and Broberg for while, having wanted both players in a potential trade prior for Blues forward Pavel Buchnevich. No deal was ever finalized, and now St. Louis targets two players on their radar longer than once known.
Broberg has reportedly been wanting an exit from the Oilers, but the decision will come from Edmonton’s end, and a decision has not yet been made.
The deal would have been a beneficial boost to Edmonton’s offense looking for more scoring beyond Connor McDavid & Leon Draisaitl, especially with a need for more offense on the wing. Although it’s likely a deal would not have just included the two aforementioned names, there was a need for more scoring even with McDavid, Draisaitl, Zach Hyman & Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Buchnevich’s 63 points with St. Louis would’ve finished 6th among Oilers players, 18 PTS ahead of Mattias Ekholm for 7th.
Broberg, 23, appeared in just 12 games for the Oilers in 2023-24, with 2 points. Broberg had 2 goals and 3 points in 10 games during Edmonton’s playoff push to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Holloway, 22, had 6 goals and 9 points in 38 for the Oilers in 2023-24, with 5 goals and 7 points in 25 playoff games.
