Luton Town have agreed a deal worth up to £10m for Cardiff City star Mark McGuinness, according to BBC Sport.
Luton Town are in need of some more signings over the final days of the summer transfer window having endured a tough start to the 2024/25 campaign.
The Hatters are without a number of key players due to injury and while the starting XI was an improved one against Portsmouth at the weekend, the lack of depth in Rob Edwards’ ranks is a cause for concern.
There’s still time for that to be addressed though. The transfer window is open until 11pm on August 30th.
However, it could be that Luton Town don’t need that long to complete the eye-catching signing of Cardiff City centre-back Mark McGuinness. BBC Sport reports that the Hatters have reached an agreement to bring the former Arsenal youngster to Kenilworth Road.
The deal could be worth as much as £10m with the Bluebirds sanctioning the sale. McGuinness was absent as Erol Bulut’s side were thumped by Burnley and he is now set to travel for a medical following the agreement between the two clubs.
His only outing this season has been in the Carabao Cup, scoring in a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers.
A statement deal
It’s been a long time coming, but Luton Town are finally making a statement signing.
Business to far has been both limited and shrewd. Reuell Walters and Shandon Baptiste are the only additions to have been made at this late stage in the summer transfer window and neither of them cost a transfer fee.
The impending move for McGuinness certainly changes that. The Hatters are getting one of Cardiff City’s most important players and a standout at this level, and they’re paying a big price for that.
The £10m deal will likely consist of add-ons taking it to that total, but it’s a significant investment for a Luton Town side that has not been spending freely in recent years. Even on their rise to the Premier League, business remained fairly shrewd.

McGuinness joined Cardiff City in the summer of 2021 off the back of a loan stint with Ipswich Town. He first really made a name for himself during a fantastic loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the first half of the 2022/23 season though.
Since returning to South Wales, he has become a key player in South Wales.
McGuinness is a towering presence at the back and at 23, the general feeling is that the best days of his career are still ahead of him. That can only be a good sign given the levels he has shown in the Championship already.
It looks to be a great signing for Luton Town, so they’ll be hopeful of getting this one over the line.
