Norwich City Set To Fend Off Ambitious MLS Interest In Key Player

Norwich City striker Josh Sargent has had interest from the MLS but a deal is unlikely to progress as their window draws to an end, the Pink Un has said.

Norwich City have had American striker Sargent on the books since the summer of 2021.

They brought him over from Germany, where he had emerged as a top prospect at Werder Bremen. And, after a somewhat challenging start to life on these shores, he’s become one of the club’s most important players.

Sargent assumed the role of leading talisman after Teemu Pukki’s exit last summer. A long-term ankle injury kept him out long-term but he managed a thoroughly impressive 16 goals in his 26 Championship games.

That form hasn’t gone unnoticed, and it is now said that the Norwich City star has had ambitious admirers back in his native.

According to the Pink Un, MLS duo St. Louis City and FC Cincinnati have both made contact with the Canaries over the possibility of striking a deal for Sargent. However, a deal is unlikely.

Despite the contact, it is unlikely to progress to anything meaningful the American transfer window closes at 6am on Thursday morning. Besides, Norwich City will not sanction a move unless anyone gets close to their valuation.

There is still European interest though, which could be one to watch as the window here continues.

One striker already needed

As Norwich City look bound to cash in on Adam Idah, selling Josh Sargent too would make for a real recruitment headache over the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

Idah is set to join Celtic in a deal worth up to £9.5m and he will need replacing. In the current market, it will be hard enough for the Canaries to sign one striker, let alone another if they were tempted into selling Sargent.

However, given the key role the United States international holds, the resolve to keep him will be stronger. The price tag will be higher too, which will fend off admirers.

The MLS interest in a striker on the up was certainly ambitious and with such little time remaining in their window, it would have been a real surprise if they were able to tempt Norwich into cashing in.

Signings needed, not sales

Cashing in on Idah is sensible business. The chance to land a fee like that for someone who hasn’t really nailed down a place in the starting XI doesn’t come around often.

However, the focus at Carrow Road is on signings, not outgoings.

Norwich City boss Thorup needs to be backed over the final weeks of the window, and that means making moves on the transfer front to strengthen his squad further.

Callum Doyle (loan), Jose Cordoba, Ben Chrisene and Amankwah Forson have signed but more is wanted, and it will be hoped it follows before the window slams shut at 11pm on August 30th.
