Notts County Secure The Services Of 37-Year-Old Veteran Forward For The 2025-2026 Campaign

Notts County have moved to retain the services of David McGoldrick by offering the experienced striker a new contract for the 2025–26 campaign.

The 37-year-old forward, who returned to his boyhood club in 2023, played a pivotal role in helping the Magpies secure a top-six finish in League Two. McGoldrick scored 17 goals this season—second only to the club’s leading scorer—and has now netted 30 times in 76 appearances since rejoining from Derby County.

Head coach keen to keep veteran

Head coach Stuart Maynard had previously expressed a desire to keep McGoldrick involved, and that intention has now been formalised with a new deal on the table.

“He is incredible, we want him to be at the club,” Maynard said following the club’s play-off semi-final exit against AFC Wimbledon.

McGoldrick, who also enjoyed spells at Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest earlier in his career, missed the second leg of the play-offs due to injury. His absence was a major blow as County crashed out at Plough Lane, ending hopes of promotion to League One.

The forward is the only out-of-contract player to be offered fresh terms following the season’s conclusion. Notts have announced the release of several first-team figures, including influential midfielder Sam Austin and former captain Kyle Cameron. Goalkeeper Sam Slocombe and versatile defender Adam Chicksen have also departed.

The club acknowledged the contributions of those released, stating on their retained list that they leave with “many fantastic memories” from their promotion-winning campaign in 2022–23.

Further departures include Charlie Whitaker, Tyler Miller, and Robbie Cundy, as the club looks to reshape its squad around key figures ahead of a renewed push for promotion.

McGoldrick’s form and professionalism throughout the season earned widespread praise. In March, he told BBC Radio Nottingham he hoped to earn an extension through his performances—and with the club now making a formal approach, the ball is in the striker’s court.

Writer’s View

Offering David McGoldrick a new contract is a no-brainer for Notts County. His contribution on and off the pitch this season has been immense, and his 17 goals were crucial to the club’s promotion challenge. More than just a scorer, McGoldrick brings leadership, experience, and a connection to the fanbase that can’t be replicated.

With a squad rebuild underway and several experienced heads moving on, keeping hold of someone as influential as McGoldrick could help maintain a strong dressing room culture—and give County a proven match-winner as they aim to go one better next season.
