Salford City appear to have targeted players in the National League as part of their recruitment strategy this summer and look set to confirm a deal for a third player with links outside of the EFL after previously securing the services of Adebola Oluwo and Kallum Cesay.
The club finished a single point outside the play-off positions after being held to a 2-2 draw by already-relegated Carlisle United on the final day of the League Two campaign.
Salford City Established in League Two But Promotion Eludes The Ammies
It is now six consecutive campaigns that the club have been competing at the top end of the fourth tier, bar an underwhelming 2023/24 season.
However, despite reaching the play-offs in 2023, a place in League One continues to elude the club that is backed by the likes of David Beckham and Gary Neville.
They should have secured a place in the League Two play-offs this campaign, having lost at home to Accrington Stanley and drawing with Carlisle in the closing weeks, matches they would have been targeting for three points.
Salford City have brought in two defenders in the early weeks of the transfer window, but have now made their move for an attacker to help ease the burden on 16-goal top scorer Cole Stockton. There is a need for reinforcements in this area as is due to return to Everton this summer following the conclusion of his loan spell.
£100k Fee Reported For Exeter City Striker
24-year-old Jay Bird spent the second half of last season on loan with National League side Rochdale, scoring five goals in 14 matches to help the team into the play-offs. The forward had scored just twice in 20 appearances for Exeter City before leaving on loan in February.
It is now being reported by Gregg Evans on X that the player is set for a medical to seal a move for a fee of around £100,000.
The amount involved appears to be a little steep for a player who is set to prove himself at EFL level, but there is potential in Bird to go and become a regular goalscorer in the fourth tier if he can get a regular run of matches. It remains to be seen if he will be able to achieve that at Salford City, with Stockton the main man in attack.
Bird’s most prolific campaign to date was in the Scottish Championship for Arbroath, where he scored six goals and provided three assists in 33 league outings.
