Salford City Set To Bring Back Star On Second Loan Spell Next Season

Salford City are reportedly interested in bringing Sunderland’s young goalkeeper Matty Young back to the club for a second loan spell next season.

That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon reporting via Patreon on Easter Sunday.

The 18-year-old shot-stopper has impressed during his time in League Two, and the Ammies are eager to secure his services again for the 2025/26 campaign.

Sunderland star Matty Young wanted on loan by Salford City again

As revealed by Nixon, Salford are hopeful of securing yet another loan agreement with Sunderland for the return of the teenage shot-stopper for next season.

Young has enjoyed a sharp rise in English football over the past 12 months. Born in November 2006, he’s already represented England at Under-18, Under-19, and Under-20 level respectively, and looks set to be a key figure in Sunderland’s long-term plans.

After a short but successful loan at National League North side Darlington last term – where he was named Young Player of the Season – Young stepped up to the EFL with Salford City in July 2024.

Despite competition for the number one shirt from veteran shot-stopper Jamie Jones, Young broke into the side in November and has since made 17 League Two appearances.

Matty Young’s 24/25 League Two stats as of 20 April (via FotMob)
Appearances 17
Goals conceded 14
Clean sheets 8
Save percentage 73.1%
Goals prevented 0.48
Errors leading to goal 0
Acted as sweeper 16

During that time, he has kept eight clean sheets and conceded just 14 goals. His save percentage sits at a solid 73.1%, and he’s yet to make a single error leading directly to a goal (per FotMob) – an impressive record for any keeper, let alone one in his teenage years.

Salford, who have undergone significant changes on and off the pitch this season, view Young as a crucial part of their defensive stability. His calm presence and shot-stopping ability has earned him praise from coaching staff, teammates, and fans alike.

Sunderland’s long-term plan for breakthrough goalkeeper Matty Young

Sunderland turned Matty Young professional in November 2023, just days before his 17th birthday.

The deal underlined the club’s belief in his potential, and their decision to loan him out was a calculated step to fast-track his development with regular first-team football.

Just 12 months later, in November 2024, the Black Cats doubled down on that belief by handing Young a new long-term contract. The extension keeps him at the Stadium of Light until 2028 and signals that the club see him as a genuine contender for a future first-team role.

Speaking in January of this year, Young said: “I have been with the club for over a decade. I have supported Sunderland AFC my whole life. The place means the world to me, as a player and as a supporter.

“I want to play for this club in the future. That is the goal for me. I am working my way up to hopefully get my opportunity. I am really pleased with the progress I am making so far.”

Now, with his long-term future secure, Sunderland may once again look to the loan system as a way to bridge the gap between promise and senior-level readiness.

With first-team opportunities limited by the presence of more experienced goalkeepers, a second loan to Salford could offer the ideal platform for Young to continue his upward trajectory.

Should the two clubs come to an agreement, Young would return to Salford not just as a promising loanee, but as a proven performer, now backed by a long-term contract and growing expectations at his parent club.
