Sheffield Wednesday Boss Reveals Transfer Activities Ahead Of Deadline

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl said he feels positive about the Owl’s transfer business but did not rule out a potential late move before the market shuts on Friday, August 30.

There have been plenty of incomings and outgoings at Hillsborough this summer. The Yorkshire outfit have signed nine players permanently and two on loan. However, they also allowed nine players to leave the club permanently, as recorded by Transfermarkt.

Overall, Rohl and the Owl’s hierarchy did their business early in this window, with most players arriving in July. Only Shea Charles and £2.6 million Ike Ugbo joined during August, while Mallik Wilks and Bambo Diaby departed this month, per BeSoccer.

Early dealings show a marked difference in approach to the transfer market compared to January 2024. During Rohl’s first window at Hillsborough, the club finalised late deals for Kristian Pederson and Ian Poveda on deadline day.

The German manager, during an interview with the Sheffield Star, admitted that Sheffield Wednesday is in a much better position following their business in July and August. In addition, Rohl said any further transfers would be considered. However, he appeared generally happy with the work done this summer.

“I think we signed now 11 players from the final day and to speak now about a busy day? I said before that we will see what happens in the last 24 hours if there is an opportunity or not, but all in all we worked very hard in this transfer window and now to expect that we sign on the final day four more players? It is not reality.

“We did a good job until now and you never know what happens but it is different to January, in January it really was the final day and we tried and tried to bring players in. We are looking and sometimes it is about timing and opportunities and for this we are ready but it’s not always just our decision.”

During the current transfer window, the Owls have signed a blend of experienced players and young talents on loan from the Premier League. Meanwhile, fringe players and older squad members have been moved on during the summer rebuild. Such improvements have left Rohl content with the transfer window and he believes his next job is to blend the new signings into the club.

“I think we made a huge step with a lot of new players in. We have built the squad, we refresh the squad and in this case we got nearly every player together and this is good. I made a long, long statement on Tuesday about the process and it makes no sense to do that again, but we have made some really good signings to help the squad and improve the squad and now it is about improving the players and the team together.”
