Three Premier League Loanees Danny Rohl Can Target For Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have made only one loan signing in the summer transfer window so far.

The Owls have snapped up three players for a seven-figure total, while another six have arrived on free transfers.

James Beadle remains their only loan addition, arriving at Sheffield Wednesday for a second time from Brighton.

Danny Rohl found great success in the loan market in January, bringing in Beadle, Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda, all of whom contributed massively to their survival.

Wednesday will surely look to follow the same route in the final weeks of the window, with Premier League clubs likely to offload their youngsters as they complete their own summer business.

Rohl has admitted he would still like to bolster his defence and midfield and have already been linked with another Brighton player in Malick Yalcouye.

Here are three other top flight players that the Owls could snap up on loan.

Myles Lewis-Skelly

Lewis-Skelly has been making his mark in Arsenal’s senior team during their pre-season schedule, having previously been praised by Jack Wilshere.

The former midfielder hailed Lewis-Skelly as ‘unplayable’ in the FA Youth Cup, making a positive impression with the U21s, despite only being 17 years old.

Mikel Arteta has discussed the possibility of already promoting him to the first team in the Premier League, but it would be interesting to see if they would consider loaning him out if an offer came up.

James McConnell

McConnell is one of a number of Liverpool youngsters to hit the headlines last season, with the 19-year-old making seven appearances for the senior team, including a 33-minute cameo in the Carabao Cup final victory.

Jurgen Klopp has shared his appreciation for McConnell on more than one occasion, admitting after the Carabao Cup that his development had been ‘absolutely insane’.

The midfielder seems less likely to pick up minutes now that Klopp has left though, and TEAMtalk have now reported that Liverpool are open to loaning him out.

According to This Is Anfield, Hull City, Blackburn, Derby, Huddersfield and Birmingham have all expressed interest in signing him this summer.

James Hill

Hill joined Bournemouth from Fleetwood Town in 2022 and managed only one appearance in the Championship before he was loaned out to Blackburn.

The defender went onto pick up four goal contributions in 18 appearances for Rovers, playing both centrally and at right-back.

Hill was hailed as a ‘real standout’ during a cup defeat to Chelsea in November, while former Rovers manager John Dahl Tomasson said he was ‘strong like hell’ and ‘has a lot of potential’.

The 22-year-old was recalled to Bournemouth in January and managed five appearances in the Premier League.

The Cherries have since signed centre-back Dean Huijsen, meaning Hill’s minutes could be limited if he doesn’t leave on loan again.

Where Sheffield Wednesday rank in the Championship spending table this summer

Unsurprisingly, it’s one of the relegated Premier League teams who top the Championship spending table so far this summer; Burnley.

Scott Parker’s side have spent a staggering £36million so far this summer, with half of that on new striker Mike Tresor from Genk.

Leeds United are in 2nd with an expenditure of £17.75million this summer, with Coventry City in 3rd with £12.75million, and Middlesbrough in 4th with £10.58million, per Transfermarkt.

Sheffield Wednesday meanwhile rank in 9th with an expenditure of £4.1million so far this summer; just behind Sheffield United in 8th who’ve spent £5.34million.

Ugbo is one of Sheffield Wednesday’s most expensive signings, and the most expensive since Joost van Aken in 2017, with this summer being the club’s biggest summer spending spree since 2017 also.

Sheffield Wednesday could be ready to spend some more money

Seeing Chansiri dip into his pockets is great for Sheffield Wednesday fans.

The last few years have been very challenging both on and off the pitch, but there appears to be much brighter times ahead with Rohl at the helm.

And even if Rohl is eventually poached by a Premier League team, Chansiri will have learned a lot from the German’s tenure, and will hopefully avoid falling into his old habits.

The summer transfer window closes on August 30th and Sheffield Wednesday could yet spend some more money.

Sheffield Wednesday are keen on Loreintz Rosier and Fortuna Sittard; he’s under contract until 2025 and so he’d cost a transfer fee.

And there’s other names linked with the Owls, who look set to be active in the final two weeks of the window.

Chansiri must manage his spending though, and ensure that his side have some resources for January too.
