The Boston Bruins are entering the summer with just under $21 million of cap space. As a result, they are in a real position to make some notable additions to their roster. Adding a top-six center and top-six winger are two priorities the Bruins should have this offseason.
While the free agent market does not offer the most options down the middle after Elias Lindholm, plenty of top-six wingers could grab the Bruins’ attention. Some include Tyler Toffoli, Jonathan Marchessault, Tyler Bertuzzi, Teuvo Teravainen, Jonathan Drouin, and Vladimir Tarasenko.
However, with the Bruins having so much cap space to work with, GM Don Sweeney is in a position to make a massive splash if he wants to. Therefore, why shouldn’t he try to land this year’s biggest fish in Jake Guentzel?
On the latest episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Carolina Hurricanes are shopping Guentzel’s signing rights for a mid-round pick. With the Bruins having the cap space to give Guentzel what he would want, this should get their attention.
It would be a gamble for the Bruins to deal, say, their 2025 third-round pick to obtain Guentzel’s signing rights. However, with the Bruins having cap space and needing another high-impact scorer in their top six, it may be worth some consideration. At a minimum, they should kick tires on him if he hits the market on July 1. Players of his level aren’t always made available.
